State Employees Can Ride for Free!

North Carolina State Government employees can ride Triangle Transit or Capital Area Transit (CAT) routes for FREE using the GoPass. Please see the frequently asked questions below for more information.

*Triangle Transit currently has separate agreements with UNC-Chapel Hill / UNC Hospital & NC State University.

Why are employees of the University of NC College System not eligible to receive a GoPass?  back to top

University employees are not eligible because they were not covered in the contract that Triangle Transit signed with the NC state government. We do, however, have agreements with UNC/UNC Hospital and NC State University at this time. Please see our list of Employer Discounted Pass Programs for information about the free rides available for these employees.

Where can I obtain my GoPass?  back to top

If you are eligible to receive the GoPass, then you can obtain the pass from your agency’s parking coordinator. If you do not know who your parking coordinator is, then please call us at 919-485-RIDE (7433) to find out.

Does Triangle Transit or CAT offer express routes?  back to top

Yes. Triangle Transit offers two express routes in the Triangle. One route operates between Chapel Hill and Raleigh, and the other route operates between Durham and Raleigh. You can ride either of these routes for FREE with your GoPass.

What if I don’t live on a bus route?  back to top

Many commuters do not live along Triangle Transit bus routes. Triangle Transit does service several park-and-ride locations throughout the Triangle area.

Can I ride the buses for purposes that are not work related?  back to top

Yes. The GoPass, while designed for travel between home and work, does not limit usage. Any eligible state government employee can ride Triangle Transit or CAT buses anytime with their GoPass (except for the State Fair and University events).

What happens if I leave state government?  back to top

When a state government employee leaves, the ID badge along with the GoPass is returned to the employer.
